Freshman Admission

Incoming freshmen seeking admission to a major in the School of Medicine Health Professions must meet the University's general admissions requirements, in addition to any program-specific criteria outlined below. Students who do not meet the stated requirements but who are otherwise eligible for admission to WVU will be admitted to the Healthcare Pathway in the Center for Learning, Advising and Student Success (CLASS), where they will have the opportunity to take prerequisite courses and work towards meeting admission criteria.

Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics

Entering WVU freshmen who are interested in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics are admitted directly into the program as long as they are eligible to be admitted to WVU.

Students admitted via this route must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in all college coursework, and a prerequisite GPA of 2.75. Students not maintaining these requirements will be admitted to the Healthcare Pathway and will be permitted to apply through regular admission.

Communication Sciences and Disorders

Entering WVU freshmen who are interested in Communication Sciences and Disorders are admitted directly into the major with an overall GPA of 3.0 or a 23 Composite ACT or 1150 SAT or 45 ALEKS placement score. Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis if the applicant's GPA or test scores are below the published requirements for automatic direct admission.

Well-qualified first-time freshmen (e.g., high school GPA of 3.7 or greater, 26 ACT or 1230 SAT) may be eligible for the Communication Sciences and Disorders Early Assurance Program. Enrollment in the EAP does not guarantee admission into the student's preferred graduate program, but waives certain application requirements and provides an integrated pathway from the BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders to one of the two graduate programs offered by WVU (Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology or Doctor of Audiology).

Exercise Physiology

Entering WVU freshmen who are interested in Exercise Physiology are admitted directly into the program as long as they are eligible to be admitted to WVU. 

Well-qualified first-time freshmen (e.g., high school GPA of 3.5 or greater, 24 Math ACT or 570 Math SAT) may be eligible for the Physical Therapy Early Assurance Program. Enrollment in the EAP does not guarantee admission into the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), but waives certain application requirements and provides an integrated pathway from the BS in Exercise Physiology to the DPT.

Health Informatics and Information Management

Entering WVU freshmen who are interested in Health Informatics and Information Management are admitted directly into the program as long as they are eligible to be admitted to WVU. 

Immunology and Medical Microbiology

Entering WVU freshmen who are interested in Immunology and Medical Microbiology are admitted directly into the program with a high school GPA of 3.7 or higher and placement into CHEM 115 (e.g., 26 Math ACT, 610 Math SAT, or ALEKs placement score of 65). Applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis if the applicant does not submit test scores, and/or the applicant's GPA or test scores are below the published requirements for automatic direct admission.

Respiratory Therapy

  • Students applying for Fall 2024 should contact Julie Day, Assistant Director of Recruitment, for information on how to apply. 

Entering WVU freshman who have a minimum overall high school GPA of 2.75 and meet all other general admission requirements to the University may be provisionally admitted into the Respiratory Therapy major, space permitting. Applicants who do not meet the provisional admission requirements will be placed in the Healthcare Pathway in the Center for Learning, Advising and Student Success (CLASS), where they may pursue prerequisite coursework.

Students will be provisionally admitted on a rolling basis, with a priority deadline of December 1. Due to current accreditation requirements, sixteen students per cohort, per year can enroll in the respiratory therapy program, thus academic deposits will also be accepted on a rolling basis until the class is filled. The program anticipates a competitive process for the limited number of seats in this new program, therefore interested candidates are strongly encouraged to apply and if admitted, deposit as early as possible.   

For the first sixteen provisionally admitted students who submit their academic deposit, their admission status will be updated to reflect that they are fully admitted. Students who were provisionally admitted but are not one of the first sixteen to deposit will be placed within the (CLASS) pathway and future admission is not guaranteed. However, CLASS students may apply for admission consideration (if seats would become available) using the RT indirect pathway process. 

Should the program cohort not receive maximum enrollment of direct admission pathway (high school) applicants by December 1, the program will continue to assess new high school candidates in an ongoing manner and also open the admission process to consider qualified indirect admission pathway students. This process will occur until the program has filled the vacant cohort seats.
