WVU Change of Major

Current WVU students seeking to change their major to one offered by the School of Medicine Health Professions must meet the program-specific criteria outlined below.

Interested students should email Kayla Poling at kayla.poling@hsc.wvu.edu to express their intent to change their major. Students should include their WVU ID number and the name of their intended major.

The student's academic record will be reviewed to determine eligibility for direct entry into the intended program. Credit hours and all completed coursework are reviewed as part of this process. Students considered to have sophomore through senior standing (by credit hours) will be informed of:

  • Any classes that must be completed prior to enrollment in major-specific courses; and
  • Estimated time remaining to complete the degree.

If a student is determined to be eligible for a change of major, a member of the Student Services staff will be in touch with information on next steps and registration for classes. Questions? Contact Kayla Poling, Senior Academic Advisor, or refer to the following for more information:

Tuition and Fees

  • All School of Medicine Health Professions students pay college tuition in addition to standard university tuition and fees. Students completing the major change process after tuition and fees are assessed or after payment is made will see these additional charges.

Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics

Current WVU students who are interested in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostics will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility for admission. If not offered direct admission, students will have the opportunity to continue taking prerequisite courses and apply later via the regular admission pathway.

Admission is also contingent on whether there is space available in the program, as a limited number of students can be accepted in each cohort.

Communication Sciences and Disorders

Current WVU students who are interested in Communication Sciences and Disorders must have a 2.8 cumulative grade point average (GPA) to be approved for admission.

Exercise Physiology

Current WVU students who are interested in Exercise Physiology must have a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA) to be approved for admission.

Health Informatics and Information Management

Immunology and Medical Microbiology

Admission is also contingent on whether there is space available in the program, as only 40 students can be accepted into any class (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior).

Respiratory Therapy

Current WVU students who are interested in Respiratory Therapy may apply via the indirect admission pathway. Seats in each cohort are limited, so prospective students should review admission criteria early to ensure they remain on track to submit a competitive application.
