What do you currently intend to pursue as a future career? Is there an experience you’ve had that made you realize why you chose this profession or specialization?
I am currently in my second year of physical therapy school. I have always wanted to pursue a medical career. Years ago, my 100-year-old grandma was receiving physical therapy and she proudly showed me her exercises and explained how strong they were making her feel. This solidified my love for physical therapy and the impact it has on individuals daily function and independence.
What makes you excited about pursuing this field?
I love the career of physical therapy as you can truly connect with each patient and see their constant progression from day one to their last day of therapy.
Why did you choose your major program?
Exercise Physiology was an amazing undergraduate degree to continue my education with. I would highly recommend this major to incoming students of WVU who would like to pursue careers in physical therapy, medical school, dentistry, physician assistant, etc. The professors are all amazing, and I continue to use information I previously learned.
Why did you choose to attend WVU?
I grew up attending every WVU football game as my dad was the state trooper alongside WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez and Bill Stewart. WVU has always felt like a second home to me.
What would you tell prospective students about your experience at WVU, and particularly the School of Medicine?
WVU may look like a large school, but Morgantown has such a small-town, family atmosphere that makes you never want to leave. The opportunities I have had at WVU and in the School of Medicine are endless.
Have you worked with any faculty or staff members who have made an impact on you while at WVU? If so, how?
So many professors have affected me throughout my undergraduate and professional schooling here at WVU. My current physical therapy class has been through much adversity with COVID-19 and other unexpected events. The professors have shown us so much compassion and help along the way that will never be forgotten. They truly make you feel cared for inside and outside of the classroom.
Have you participated in any clubs, student organizations or other groups in the School of Medicine? If so, do you have any special experiences to share?
I was a part of Exercise Physiology Club all four years of undergrad. We were able to raise money for Ruby Children’s Hospital to add a therapy dog to the oncology floor. This experience was special as I knew it would put a smile on many children’s faces.
Have you received any particular honors or awards during your time in the School of Medicine?
I received an award for outstanding aquatic therapy student. I highly recommend any incoming WVU student in Exercise Physiology to look into the Aquatic Therapy emphasis with Dr. Lori Sherlock.
Will you share something unique or interesting about you that others may not know?
I am interested in one day working with pediatric patients!
