End of Life Care – Vicki V. Douglas Award
This award was established in 2002 by the West Virginia University Center for Health Ethics and Law in honor of House of Delegates member Vicki V. Douglas. Delegate Douglas served in the House from 1990 until 2002. More than any other member of the legislature, Delegate Douglas championed the cause of improved end-of-life care in West Virginia. She was the lead sponsor on numerous bills that subsequently became law relating to advance directives and pain management. She was particularly concerned that physicians and other health care professionals receive education on end-of-life care.
The recipient is "a fourth year medical student who has demonstrated exemplary compassion for dying patients and outstanding knowledge and skills in palliative care."
