STUDENT ORGANIZATION HAPPENINGS:  RSVP accordingly!

ALL STUDENTS - FLU SHOT REQUIREMENT:  All MD students are required to post confirmation current flu vaccine to CastleBranch no later than December 1, 2017.  You can receive this vaccine at any health clinic or pharmacy.  Save your confirmation of immunization, e.g. receipt, doctor's note, etc.  Castle Branch will notify you when the report opens to receive this document.

NEW HSC GAME ROOM. As a result of students’ feedback, the Health Science Center will be installing some ping pong/foosball tables and additional vending machines in the lounge near the bookstore within the next 4-6 weeks.  Please remember that we share this and others resources (e.g., study carrels in the blue and gold room) with other learners in the health sciences.   Enjoy!

MANDATORY ATTENDANCE:  Getting to Residency (GTR) 0.5, Friday, October 20, after exams; all campuses - the beginning of your focused drive toward residency.     

MS2 Class of 2020

VOLUNTEER IN THE GROSS ANATOMY LAB. The structure of the lab will be based on stations highlighting the anatomy of the head, neck, and torso. You will earn community service hours for your time, and Dr. Klinkhachorn can advise you as to the amount of time you can count for this lab experience. The current proposed date for this lab is MONDAY, November 6th from 1:00pm-2:00pm (give or take a half n hour on either end).  If you are interested in helping, please email Dr. Kimberly Meigh at kmmeigh@mail.wvu.edu. 

FUTURE EASTERN STUDENTS. Dinner Meeting for Eastern Campus MSI and MSII students: Mon., Oct. 30th, Room G119A, 4:00-7:00pm.  An opportunity to meet your campus classmates, the Eastern Student Services Deans, and some of our current students on rotation in Martinsburg.

TUMOR BOARD - Every Thursday, 8th Floor Classroom, 12:00-1:00pm. Different speakers and topics.  Lunch provided.

PEDS GRAND ROUNDS is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC.  Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC.  If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

EASTERN PANHANDLE MEDICAL SOCIETY (EPMS) – Wed., Oct. 11th, at Hilton Garden Inn-Martinsburg.  Registration-5:30pm; Lecture-6:00pm.  Topic: “Urologic Cancers” presented by Mohamad W. Salkini, MD, FACS-Associate Professor Urology, J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.  Dinner provided.  RSVP as soon as possible to Carol Joseph, 304-671-3837.

SURGICAL M & M – Fri., Oct. 13th, 7:30-8:30am, in BMC 8th Floor Classroom.  Topic: “Small Bowel Obstruction-An Unusual Case”.  Student Presenters: Ashley George and Ken Hyden.

VOLUNTEER SPEAKING OPPORTUNITY – Prostate Cancer Support Group is looking for students to speak on various prostate cancer topics for 15-20 minutes, with a potential Q&A session.  Meetings held 6:30-8:30pm on second Thursday of each month, 2nd floor of Dorothy McCormack Building.  Next meeting: Oct. 12th.  Contact Dr. Paul Kradel, 304-267-2520, if interested.

COMMUNITY MINI-MED SCHOOL – Tues., Oct. 17th, in Eastern HSC Auditorium.  Lectures: 6:30pm, “Eastern Pylons History of Birth of Public Health” presented by Rosemarie Lorenzetti, MD, Family Medicine Professor; 7:00pm, “Advances in Surgical Spine Care” presented by John R. Caruso, MD, Director of Neurological Surgery and Assistant Professor.

COMMUNITY SERVICE – Keep the Faith 5K Trail Color Run/Walk, Sat., Nov. 11th, beginning at Poor House Farm Park, Martinsburg, WV.  Registration: 10am; Start time: 11am.  Run your socks off for the homeless – bring a pair of warm socks to donate.  Proceeds from registration fees will benefit Good Samaritan Free Clinic and Faith Community Coalition for the Homeless.  Contact Michelle Alder (alderm@wvumedicine.org) for details.

HALLOWEEN BOWLING/BILLIARDS Student Wellness Event – Fri., Oct. 27th, 6-8pm, at Shepherd University’s Student Center GameZone.  Dinner provided.  Come in costume for extra fun!

NAU MODULE: Dr. Johnson and Dr. Kletter strongly encourage you to review the Surgery clerkship on SOLE for directions/samples for writing admissions orders and brief op notes.  Remember that you need 3 graded H&P’s by the end of the semester.

BOTH MODULES: Be sure you are logging your cases/procedures in E-value.  All case logs MUST be complete prior to final exams, as required by the curriculum.  If you have questions, contact Jane Horst or Michelle Alder at 304-596-6312.

FRIDAY EDUCATION.  Schedule is posted in SOLE for the Fall semester.  This is a tentative schedule, subject to change based on speaker availability.  You will be notified via email of changes in schedule.

OR Lockers – 9 additional lockers are being installed in both the men’s and women’s OR locker rooms to provide additional storage space for staff and students.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY– Healthy Bodies Healthy Spirits & Try This Regional Gathering-Berkeley and Jefferson County, Wed., Sept. 27th, 9:00am-3:30pm, at New Life Community Church (4102 Tabler Station Road, Inwood).  Free event bringing interested people together to explore regional opportunities for healthy living.  Lunch provided.  Pre-registration required by Sept. 20th – goodsamaritan.fc@gmail.com or call 304-582-5948.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES – Fall CHOICES program sponsored by Shepherd University is looking for medical student volunteers for several events.  Grant-funded, interdisciplinary educational program to assist community members who have diabetic/metabolic health issues with making proper food choices. Tues., Oct. 10th, 4:00pm-7:00pm: Dining with Diabetes at Shepherd University Dining Hall (help with food prep and education to patients) Thur., Oct. 26th, times TBA: Diabetes Awareness Day, Health Fair at SVMS.
