HSC QUALITY OF LIFE INTIATIVE With the help of researchers in the School of Public Health, the group has developed a short survey to assess what new initiatives would be most useful to HSC and WVU Medicine faculty, staff, and students. ALL STUDENTS - FLU SHOT REQUIREMENT:  All MD students are required to post confirmation current flu vaccine to CastleBranch no later than December 1, 2017.  You can receive this vaccine at any health clinic or pharmacy.  Save your confirmation of immunization, e.g. receipt, doctor's note, etc.  Castle Branch will notify you when the report opens to receive this document.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Get those last few hours of service to the school by helping us out with an upcoming event. 2017 Scholarship Celebration recognizes our donors who give generously in support of our medical students. MS3 Class of 2019

PEDIATRICS RURAL HEALTH OPPORTUNITY All MS3 students committed to match in the WVU Pediatrics Residency Program in West Virginia are encouraged to apply. Benefits include enhanced rural health curriculum in year 4, $10,000 stipend, and a position in the WVU pediatrics Residency Program in Morgantown. Deadline is January 31, 2018View attached for more information. 

FAMILY MED RURAL SCHOLARS This program is designed for students committed to making rural/small town Family Medicine in West Virginia a career.  Qualified MS III’s are eligible for a $10,000 stipend for their fourth year and facilitated admission to WVU’s Morgantown Family Medicine Residency.  The Rural Scholars Program allows for an enhanced primary care experience in the 4th year curriculum as well as early integration into the residency experience. Deadline for application is January 15, 2018.  Please contact Holly Maroon if you would like information on how to apply.

MS2 Class of 2020

VOLUNTEER IN THE GROSS ANATOMY LAB. The structure of the lab will be based on stations highlighting the anatomy of the head, neck, and torso. You will earn community service hours for your time, and Dr. Klinkhachorn can advise you as to the amount of time you can count for this lab experience. The current proposed date for this lab is MONDAY, November 6th from 1:00pm-2:00pm (give or take a half n hour on either end).  If you are interested in helping, please email Dr. Kimberly Meigh at kmmeigh@mail.wvu.edu. 

Y2Q – YEAR 2 QUESTIONNAIRE will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete and will close on January 2.  Once you complete the Y2Q, please bring down a receipt confirming that you completed the questionnaire and bring it to the Student Services office.  Your name will be added to the list, which we will use to draw random prizes during each day of Y2Q week (this week).  If we are able to get 100% compliance, we will also include some special activities for the class.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY. CAMC Women and Children's is having their annual Teddy Bear Fair on Saturday October 7, and they are looking for some help! The purpose of the Fair is to allow kiddos to experience the hospital in a non-threatening way and to provide fun health education! As volunteers, we will help with set up/tear down and assist at various stations. Shifts are 8:30-11:00 and 11:00-1:30. Sign up HERE!

TUMOR BOARD - Every Thursday, 8th Floor Classroom, 12:00-1:00pm. Different speakers and topics.  Lunch provided.

PEDS GRAND ROUNDS is broadcast from Morgantown every Wednesday 8-9 am. The first Wednesday is at the board room on the 8th floor of BMC.  Remaining sessions held at the ED conference room in ED of BMC.  If you are on a Pediatrics Week, please plan to attend.

TOUR GUIDES NEEDED – Wed., Oct. 11th, for WVU School of Medicine Interview Day at Eastern Campus.  If you are on rotation at BMC and would be available approximately 11am-1:15pm to lead a brief tour and have lunch with interview candidates, please advise Jane Horst (horstj@wvumedicine.org).  4 student tour guides needed.

VOLUNTEER SPEAKING OPPORTUNITY – Prostate Cancer Support Group is looking for students to speak on various prostate cancer topics for 15-20 minutes, with a potential Q&A session.  Meetings held 6:30-8:30pm on second Thursday of each month, 2nd floor of Dorothy McCormack Building.  Next meeting: Oct. 12th.  Contact Dr. Paul Kradel, 304-267-2520, if interested.

COMMUNITY MINI-MED SCHOOL – Tues., Oct. 17th, in Eastern HSC Auditorium.  Lectures: 6:30pm, “Eastern Pylons History of Birth of Public Health” presented by Rosemarie Lorenzetti, MD, Family Medicine Professor; 7:00pm, “Advances in Surgical Spine Care” presented by John R. Caruso, MD, Director of Neurological Surgery and Assistant Professor.

COMMUNITY SERVICE – Keep the Faith 5K Trail Color Run/Walk, Sat., Nov. 11th, beginning at Poor House Farm Park, Martinsburg, WV.  Registration: 10am; Start time: 11am.  Run your socks off for the homeless – bring a pair of warm socks to donate.  Proceeds from registration fees will benefit Good Samaritan Free Clinic and Faith Community Coalition for the Homeless.  Contact Michelle Alder (alderm@wvumedicine.org) for details.

HALLOWEEN BOWLING/BILLIARDS Student Wellness Event – Fri., Oct. 27th, 6-8pm, at Shepherd University’s Student Center Game Zone.  Dinner provided.  Come in costume for extra fun!

NAU MODULE: Dr. Johnson and Dr. Kletter strongly encourage you to review the Surgery clerkship on SOLE for directions/samples for writing admissions orders and brief op notes.  Remember that you need 3 graded H&P’s by the end of the semester.

BOTH MODULES: Be sure you are logging your cases/procedures in E-value.  All case logs MUST be complete prior to final exams, as required by the curriculum.  If you have questions, contact Jane Horst or Michelle Alder at 304-596-6312.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES – Fall CHOICES program sponsored by Shepherd University is looking for medical student volunteers for several events.  Grant-funded, interdisciplinary educational program to assist community members who have diabetic/metabolic health issues with making proper food choices. Thur., Oct. 5th, 9:00am-4:00pm: Exercise Assessments and fitness programming at SVMS Tues., Oct. 10th, 4:00pm-7:00pm: Dining with Diabetes at Shepherd University Dining Hall (help with food prep and education to patients) Thur., Oct. 26th, times TBA: Diabetes Awareness Day, Health Fair at SVMS.
